The conversation about game preservation has been at an all-time peak lately. There are a ton of games that simply aren’t available to play anymore, leading some players towards things like piracy and emulation. The latest franchise on the digital chopping block is Devil May Cry. Valve has officially removed both Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition and Devil May Cry 4 from the Steam storefront. What’s worse is that it wasn’t Valve’s decision, but rather developer Capcom.

Are DMC 3 and 4 Really Gone on Steam?

It isn’t all sad news for Devil May Cry fans. You can still snag the Devil May Cry HD Collection, which includes the standard edition of Devil May Cry 3. The Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition is also still available to pick up. If you think it doesn’t make sense to leave these games still, then you would be right. However, these two are the only ones that do not have negative reviews due to the review bombing that occurred as a result of Capcom’s announcement to deploy Enigma, a DRM (digital rights management software).

The use of the software would give Capcom control of the access, use, and distribution of their games. This was specifically to be rolled out with Monster Hunter Rise, but fans took to all of the developer’s games to leave their thoughts and dislikes. It’s possible that the removal of these two specific games was to ensure that DMC as a whole wouldn’t be as affected as those in the Resident Evil and Street Fighter franchises were. A clear pointer to this being the case is also the fact that the SteamDB page shows that they’ve been “retired and is no longer available on the Steam store.”

This is a shot in the dark, but with the release of Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat, maybe all of the commotion is to get people thinking about the series in anticipation of the sixth main installment. You can’t blame us for hoping.
