What Does Extra Padding Do in Helldivers 2? Explained

You better bring protection.

When it comes to fighting Terminid or Automatons in Helldivers 2, protection goes a long way, and that’s what extra padding does. You might’ve noticed that most items in the game, including weapons and armor, have certain traits or bonuses that improve upon a player’s playstyle. Some allow you to throw grenades further, while others even increase the number of stims you can carry. Well, some of the armor pieces you’ll encounter have extra padding, and learning what it does will allow you to spread democracy across the galaxy more safely.

Extra padding in Helldivers 2 only says that it provides a higher armor rating when you look at an item with this trait. Yes, it might sound self-explanatory, but what does it really do? After trying one of the new pieces in the game, we sadly didn’t notice a big difference. When fighting automatons, we died after receiving the same number of shots as if we had normal armor. To give you an example, we got shot five times with normal heavy armor and died, and the same happened whilst wearing armor with the extra padding bonus. So, it would seem it doesn’t work against laser shots.

On the other hand, it would seem extra padding provides a higher protection rating against explosions. When fighting automatons, we received less damage from a grenade while wearing a piece with extra padding. It is important to say, and we want to stress this before you try it, that it won’t stop a full grenade to the face. We also tried dropping a grenade at our feet, and well, we died instantly, so don’t try this during combat.

Is Extra Padding the Best Armor Trait?

This one is a bit subjective, but personally, we don’t think it is the best. Ultimately, you need to change your loadout depending on the situation. Here, we usually bring light armor when fighting bugs, as it allows us to escape those pesky Chargers faster. However, when fighting automatons, we prefer medium or heavy because fighting these enemies is chaotic and more dangerous. That’s why we encourage you to find the best loadout for you and change it before diving into the battlefield. But, if you feel your teammates don’t have a good throwing arm and are always putting you near explosions, then yes, extra padding will do the trick when spreading democracy throughout the galaxy.
