Cloak and Dagger is a Marvel comic series whose lead heroes were first introduced in 1982’s Spectacular Spider Man #64. They went on to star in their own four-issue series starting in 1983. The comic’s success prompted a bi-monthly continuation in 1985. Rather than battle supervillains, Cloak and Dagger focused on more realistic super-problems like ending the drug trade. In April 2016, Marvel Television announced a live-action TV series to air on Freeform network (formerly ABC Family) in 2018.
Cloak and Dagger is set to start filming in February and will be produced by Daredevil‘s Joe Pokaski and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, at least for the pilot episode. Rumor has it that Cloak will be played by Noah Gray-Cabey, while Debby Ryan has been cast as Dagger. This is only a rumor at the moment, though, as no official announcement has been made. We do, however, know a little bit about the characters themselves.
Cloak, aka Travis (Tyrone Johnson in the comics) was a fearless young African American who made a terrible mistake. As a result he grew up in fear, putting all his effort into school and basketball, trying to control what little bits of life he could. Dagger, called Tara in the show and Tandy Bowen in the comics, had a rich, wonderful life. She was filled with light, until a horrible accident took everything from her. Now she survives by cheating and robbing tourists, trying to take back everything she lost.
Cloak and Dagger’s budget is said to equal Marvel’s Netflix series, indicating the studio intends to make it a fully fleshed-out show, and not just a quick throwaway cash grab. We won’t know how good it really is until it airs next year, but you can bet The Nerd Stash will be there to cover it.
