Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have a dwindling reputation to fix, and fast. The twosome has been subject to bouts of scandals since their royal exit in March 2020. From the explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey to their controversial Netflix documentary, the couple have seemingly been on a mission to weed out the “firm” or at least revolutionize centuries of royal traditions. While that went well for them during the initial craze, the tables soon turned, with the previously welcoming Hollywood (and netizens with ever-volatile opinions) turning on them like a flash. But where did it all go wrong?
Mark Dolan Rips Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Move to Rebuild Reputation
Talks of Meghan Markle’s bid to rebuild her reputation in the UK have prevailed. Several outlets have reported that the Duchess sought to hire a PR expert based in Britain, who could help her achieve a complete image overhaul, possibly winning over the hearts of UK citizens once again. She hoped employing professional help to gain the positive publicity she so much needed would help boost her Sussex brand, another controversial reveal of 2024.
Reacting to the news, GBN‘s Mark Dolan ripped the couple apart, making it clear they would never be able to fix their reputation, He tagged any PR position aimed at doing just that as the hardest job on the planet. The broadcaster likened the post of “Meghan Markle’s publicist” to fighting the war in Ukraine, saying even that would be more relaxing.
Going further, the presenter implied Meghan Markle needed to seek “professional help” herself, instead of “seeking professional help to improve her brand” or reputation. He went on to describe Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as “toxic,” and “self-absorbed narcissists.” He added,
“Let me tell you, there is no hope of Meghan Markle rebuilding her reputation here in the UK.”
Where Did It All Go Wrong?
Like many, Mark believed Meghan was mostly responsible for the fate of the Sussexes. However, he held Harry accountable as well, noting that the Duke of Sussex was “big and ugly enough” to decide for himself. Laying out the extent of the damage to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s reputation, Mark quipped,
“They are the laughing stock of comedy shows like South Park, and even woke liberal talk show hosts like Jimmy Kimmel are making ruthless gags at their expense.”
Damaged reputation aside, the previously untouchable Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have become the butt of the joke for many comedians. In the past year, comedians like Chris Rock, Jimmy Kimmel, and even less celebrated comedians and internet trolls have taken jabs at them. This window to take jabs at the couple opened up sometime in February 2024, after the cartoon South Park mocked them in one episode.
With the animated series getting away with that, it didn’t take long for the world to realize the couple was no longer untouchable. Ultimately, people began to voice what they really thought about the duo, especially Meghan’s constant portrayal of herself as a victim. Thus, the sheltering wall of kindness initially offered by Hollywood crumbled that instant. But they realized it several months too late. At least that’s how long it took them to take action.
Guess they were too busy raking in the millions generated from Harry’s memoir, Spare; or perhaps banking on the misguided hope the book would attract more public sympathy and catapult them to America’s number one list, much like their Oprah interview. Whatever the case, these two missed their chance to salvage their reputation over a year ago.
