TikTok users are expressing concern for popular Amish creator Sarah Joy after she released a video apologizing for offending “anyone for stepping outside of the community guidelines.” The creator, who creates under the name @thatplaingirl and has amassed a following of over 582,000 followers, is a frequent For You page creator who focuses on recording life within the Amish/ Mennonite community.
Commentators and other TikTok creators are weighing in on the severity of the situation. At the end of the day, those within Mennonite and Amish communities are barred from having cell phones. She even created a video discussing that particular topic.
What Happened to Sarah Joy?
In the now viral TikTok video, Sarah Joy is facing the camera with a solemn expression while explaining how the video we’re watching will be her last “while she is still in the community.”
“It has been very nice to get to know all of you and I appreciate the opportunity that you have given me to talk about the community. I wish you well.”
The video itself is haunting to watch as a fan of her content. Her typically bubble personality is suppressed and just before saying how she appreciated being able to talk about the community, she takes a moment to look off-camera. It also seems that she’s reading off of something behind the camera for the duration of the video.
Other TikTok creators, including Nate Petroski (@natepetroski) have been casting doubt on the creator, talking about how it’s possible that Sarah Joy isn’t Amish at all. Photos of Sarah wearing modern clothing have surfaced, which is not allowed in the Amish/ Mennonite communities. This is causing some to believe that her content might not have been genuine and that she’s been forced to stop out of respect for those who are actually Amish.
A new link to products by Miss Commando has appeared in Sarah’s TikTok bio, which helps fuel the narrative of her being Amish. When those in the Mennonite community are extradited, they do not receive any financial help. With that in mind, this link might be her secret way of telling viewers that she has been removed from the Amish community and is using these products to make an income.
