In 2015, years before some of the most controversial events in history, one event shocked the Midwestern state of Missouri. Nine years ago, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard convinced her then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to murder her mother Dee Dee Blanchard to popularize the term Munchausen By Proxy. Gypsy-Rose was released from prison in December 2023 after serving eight years of her 10-year sentence.
But where is Gypsy-Rose Blanchard now? After months in the limelight, Gypsy-Rose attracted an influx of fans, but she also faced severe backlash for her apparent non-remorseful and attention-seeking behavior.
The Gypsy-Rose Controversy, Explained
The 32 year old has been at the center of controversy following her release, particularly concerning her now-ex-husband Ryan Scott Anderson. Reports confirmed that Gypsy-Rose recently split with her husband of two years, while netizens point out an OnlyFans account tied to the convicted murderer.
While in prison, Gypsy-Rose was romantically linked to a man named Ken, whom she met after Ken became her pen pal. They were engaged for a short while, but eventually called it off. Instead, Blanchard married a Louisiana teacher named Ryan Scott Anderson in a ceremony with no guests present. As revealed in the six-part docu-series The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, Gypsy-Rose’s family were skeptical that the marriage would last following her release.
Shortly after her release, Gypsy-Rose attended many red carpet events with Ryan in tow. This led onlookers to suspect Gypsy-Rose of attention-seeking and using her status as a public icon for clout. There were also rumors that her then-husband was manipulating her and vice-versa, as followers attacked her Instagram comments to express their disapproval for the couple.
Many followers accused Gypsy-Rose of showing no remorse towards her mother’s murder, believing she should have been locked up longer. Others pointed fingers at Ryan, whom they accused of exploiting Gypsy-Rose for her influence to remain in the public eye.
On numerous occasions, Gypsy-Rose deactivated her Instagram profile, then reinstated it, and rinse and repeat. Towards the end of her marriage, she made her Instagram completely private and significantly reduced her ‘following’ count. After the announcement, both Gypsy-Rose and Ryan deactivated their profiles.
And she’s been absent from social media ever since. However, internet sleuths quickly found an OnlyFans linked to Gypsy-Rose, for which she charges $50 a month to subscribers.
How The World Turned On Gypsy-Rose
When the news of Gypsy-Rose’s parole was hot off the presses, it seemed the whole world was fighting her corner. Once details of the abuse she suffered at the hands of her mother were made public, Gypsy-Rose earned the loyalty and respect of those who also suffer from strained mother-daughter relationships. But Gypsy-Rose’s fame soon to a nosedive when it became obvious that she only sought to capitalize on her misdeeds.
Shortly after her release, Gypsy-Rose announced her e-book, Released: Conversations on The Eve of Freedom. It was released in January 2024. This was around the same time that followers grew wary of Anderson and began having a change of heart towards Gypsy-Rose, too. Before, Gypsy-Rose had received praise for fighting back against her abusive mother. However, once she began to profit from the experience, it raised some red flags.
In January alone, Gypsy-Rose appeared on Good Morning America, The View, and the popular podcast The Viall Files, the former of which she booked for the same day.
There have been many portrayals of Gypsy-Rose Blanchard in popular media, most notably in Hulu’s The Act, where Gypsy-Rose was portrayed by The Kissing Booth star Joey King. HBO also released a documentary film, Mommy Dead and Dearest, in 2017. It included exclusive interviews from Blanchard and Godejohn.
Godejohn is serving a life sentence at the Potosi Correctional Center, per The Springfield News-Leader. Gypsy-Rose Blanchard looks to finalize her divorce from Ryan Scott Anderson.
