Earlier this week, after she posted a cryptic message to her Instagram, fans wondered: did Lizzo quit music? The singer returned to the social media platform a few days later to clarify what she meant. While Lizzo does not intend to stop making music, she does plan to leave behind all negative energy. The clarification came as a relief to fans and other celebrities who look to Lizzo and her music as a source of inspiration.

On March 31, Lizzo said on Instagram, “I’m getting tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the Internet. All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it. But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it.” She ended the note with, “I QUIT,” including a peace sign emoji. Fans’ comments encouraged the body-positive singer to continue making music.

Lizzo must have heard her fans, because days later she posted a video of herself saying, “When I say I quit, I mean, I quit giving any negative energy attention. What I’m not gonna quit is the joy of my life, which is making music, which is connecting to people.” This announcement comes just months after a Los Angeles judge ruled that the harassment and discrimination case filed against Lizzo last summer by former backup dancers will not be dismissed as the singer requested.

“We’re very pleased with the judge’s ruling, and we absolutely consider it a victory on balance,” attorney Ron Zambrano said to People on behalf of the women he’s representing in the suit. Some of the judge’s decisions did go in Lizzo’s favor, though, as certain discrimination and harassment claims were dismissed. If Lizzo quits music in the future, she might not be able to pay for her lawyers.
