Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is making headlines both on and off the field after a fiery pre-game moment went viral on X (formerly Twitter). In a now widely shared clip, the Bucs star can be seen walking out of the tunnel before Sunday’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, and stopping just long enough to fire back at a heckling fan. “You’ll be real quiet at halftime,” Mayfield shouted, before following it up with an explicit insult.
The Buccaneers went on to defeat the Seahawks 38-35, improving to 4-1 on the season, and Mayfield made sure to back up his trash talk when the game was over. After the final whistle, the former No. 1 overall pick wasn’t done with his verbal sparring. Cameras caught him heading back toward the same area where the heckler had been before kickoff, this time yelling, “I TOLD YOU SO! I TOLD YOU SO!”
Fans online couldn’t get enough of the moment, calling it “Now that’s a football player.” One person commented, “That’s the Baker I love,” while another added, “You can’t help but love Baker Mayfield.” Others, however, weren’t impressed and felt Mayfield shouldn’t give in to the fans and, instead, should focus on being a “better role model.” One user asked, “And NFL why is this acceptable??? No fines??” Another called him a “highly paid man child.”
A Record-Setting Day for Baker Mayfield
Sunday’s win marked another milestone for Tampa Bay, who started 4-1 or better for just the sixth time in franchise history (joining 1979, 1997, 2002, 2005, 2021, and now 2025). The team remains in first place in the NFC South, having held at least a share of that position in 63 of the last 77 weeks.
Under new offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard, the Bucs’ offense exploded for 426 total yards, which is their highest output of the season and most since Week 17 of 2024, when they racked up 551 yards against Carolina. The 38-point performance also pushed Tampa Bay to sixth in the NFL in total scoring, with 135 points through five games.
On top of the viral tunnel moment, Mayfield’s performance on the field was one for the record books. He completed 29-of-33 passes (87.9%) for 379 yards and two touchdowns, with zero interceptions, earning a 134.7 passer rating. His 87.9% completion rate was the highest by any quarterback in a game this season, and the second highest of his career, trailing only his 90.5% outing with the Cleveland Browns in 2021.
Mayfield’s Confidence is Fueling Tampa’s Fire
Through Sunday’s games, Mayfield now ranks tied for third in passing touchdowns (10), fourth in passing yards (1,283), fourth in TD-to-interception ratio (10.0), and ninth in passer rating (104.4). According to CBS, he also became the first quarterback in NFL history with 375+ passing yards and fewer than five incompletions in a regular-season game.
He’s just the fourth player since the 1970 merger to post 375+ passing yards and an 85%+ completion rate in a single game, joining legends Tom Brady (2009), Lamar Jackson (2021), and Justin Herbert (2023).
