Let the waiting game begin.

Square Enix has unexpectedly provided an update on the development status of the last part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, and itโ€™s not that far off. The revelation comes from the creative director of the recently released Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Tetsuya Nomura himself, so itโ€™s very likely to be accurate.

The best part is that he even updated how far along the game is. Nomura says that the studio is already done with the main story of Part 3 of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy and that they will start recording the dialogues soon.

He also said that the producer of the series, Yoshinori Kitase, wants to add something completely new to the final game that wasnโ€™t present in the original game, something important. What this means is conjecture at this point, but he might not be referring to the story alone.

This timeline of releasing Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 within the next 3 years might seem a bit too hopeful at first, considering the development time and budgets of modern AAA games, but Square Enix has a solid track record. Not only was the last game, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, also completed within three years of the first game, it was also done while expanding the scope of the original as well. Not to mention that the studio also made a DLC expansion, Episode Intermission, for the original Remake.

Although the entire industry has undergone mass layoffs left and right, Square Enix is retaining the entire team that worked on Rebirth, and the original Remake from 2020. This will allow them to hit the ground running since the entire team is already familiar with the whole development process.

Since the team has not changed, Kitase is hopeful that they will meet the 3 year period, while hopefully also expanding the scope of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which is a very high bar. This means that we might see Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 in 2027, when the original game hits its 30th anniversary.
