With over a hundred characters in Rabbit and Bear Studios’ latest game, one might wonder: “Are they really different regarding gameplay?” The answer is: they can be! Using runes in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes gives your characters magic, active and passive skills and much more. Furthermore, each character gains personal runes as they level up, making each party member different from one another and adding a sprinkle of customization to each hero. So, if you don’t know what to do with the hundreds of runes you have, we got you.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes – Rune Guide
Runes are objects that provide your characters with certain skills. You’ll unlock some as you level up, and each hero will have different slots. However, the whole system can be a bit confusing, so we’ll delve a bit into the ins and outs of it.
Unlocking Runes
Runes in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes are unlocked automatically; at least, the system is. To get new slots, you must level up your characters, as certain level breakpoints provide a new slot. It is important to remember that not all characters have the same slots. For example, Nowa, Seign, and Marisa get seven slots, while other optional party members get four or five. Furthermore, you need to know that not all slots work the same. Some allies get an “All Types” slot, while others get purely “Passive” slots and nothing else. We’ll go over each type below:
- Enhance: Provides stat-increase bonuses for your heroes. For example, certain runes provide a 5% increase in Strength, Skill, and so on.
- Skill: Provide heroes with a skill slot. These skills are usually active and work as abilities in combat. Most of them consume SP during the fight. Most characters have their personal skills you can’t swap, but others allow you to mix and match abilities as you unlock new slots.
- Passive: They provide heroes with certain resistances, such as arrow resistance, poison resistance, etc. A few runes even allow that hero to taunt enemies, which is great for specific builds.
- All Types: You can equip any rune on this slot.
- Golden Slots: Character-specific runes you can’t swap. These contain the personal skills of each hero.
To give you an example of how I use runes for my Nowa build, I have a Rune of Fire, Rune of Speed, and his personal runes. This gives him fire spells and increased speed to act during combat. However, if I desire, I can swap those runes and add wind spells or increased strength.

There are many ways to obtain runes in Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. Some of these ways can be expensive, while others rely entirely on RNG. Whichever you choose, here are your options:
- Rune Shops: The most expensive but most reliable way to get runes. You can unlock and upgrade the facility at HQ to get all types.
- Enemy Drops: These are not too reliable, but if you are farming experience or items to appraise, you can get a few minor runes as drops.
- Chests: Similar to enemy drops, there’s a chance to find runes in a chest, but since the loot is fixed, you’re better off buying them.
While some may fear all hundred heroes share the same gameplay, these items allow you to customize each character differently. You can have a mage with healing spells or one with pure destructive skills and raze the battlefield. Ultimately, the choice is yours, but don’t be afraid to experiment with this mechanic.
