Previously known as Project L, Riot Gamesโ€™ upcoming free-to-play fighting game was freed from its placeholder title and is now called 2XKO. The unique name has sparked interesting conversations among fans as the game finally edges closer to release. Evo Japan is right around the corner, taking place from April 27-28, and 2XKO will finally be playable at the event along with the latest character to be announced, Illaoi. She uses tentacles to fight, and her cosmic horror-inspired design is unique in the fighting game space.

The assist-based fighting game is set in the world of League of Legends, with the same characters, but covered in a deep layer of fighting game mechanics that are easy to learn but bring limitless options for high-level players. Along with being free-to-play, removing the main barrier to entry into the fighting game genre, 2XKO also uses simplified controls, much like the Modern Controls system in Street Fighter 6, to make it easier for new players to get started.

Players can engage in 1v1 combat like normal fighting games while controlling two characters each, but 2XKO also has a Duo mode which lets four players pick one character each in two teams and duke it out. Fighting games arenโ€™t known for being team games, that is where 2XKO is trying to set itself apart.

2XKO is keeping a close eye on the fighting game community and is taking feedback into account and make one of the most robust and long-running fighting games in a long time. These lofty goals are accompanied by a promise to support the game for a long time to come.

For more information and to register for upcoming playtests, you can visit the 2XKO website here. 2XKO will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, for free. While Riot has not announced a release date, the developers are targeting a release window of 2025.
