Jason Momoa, known around these parts as Game of Thrones‘ Khal Drogo, but also gearing up to play the DC superhero Aquaman, recently sat down for a promotional event for Ubisoft’s brand new release For Honor. Momoa answered several questions about the game in an interview with Digital Trends, but they of course had to ask him about playing DC’s oft-maligned superhero. Momoa had several interesting responses to what he is excited for in the film and the particular challenges of the character.

Momoa typically plays extremely badass characters (Khal Drogo, Conan the Barbarian), and Aquaman has typically been portrayed in pop culture as anything but. When asked about how he and directors Zack Snyder (the Justice League director, in which Aquaman will appear) and James Wan (who is directing the Aquaman solo film) will make the character modern and appealing to the current generation, Momoa gushed about his favorite parts of the film:

“[It’s tough because] I’m getting made fun of a little bit. But the cool thing with Aquaman is how it taps into the native culture and that’s something that we’re only taught a little about, so there’s a lot of interesting things. I really think it’s the right time.  It’s really cool. Zack is one of those perspectives on it and DC is really getting behind it. It was a ballsy step. They did it, and I’m extremely happy with the world they’ve created. It’s an honor to be part of this.”

Momoa as Aquaman from Batman v Superman.

Momoa states he is not a big gamer (although he and fellow Game of Thrones actor Alfie Allen took down The Walking Dead‘s Lauren Cohen and UFC fighter Demetrius Johnson in their For Honor scrap), he also thinks that this version of Aquaman would make for “an absolutely amazing game.”

Momoa seems like he’s pretty down to earth, and he will hopefully be able to bring his onscreen intensity to a character who could use a face lift. Aquaman will appear in Justice League on November 17, 2017, and then in his solo film October 5, 2018.

Excited to see Khal Drogo take to the sea? Let us know in the comments below.
