Sunday night’s Roast of Tom Brady led to a lot of laughs as comedians looked back at Brady’s storied career and legacy in retirement. There were some viewers, however, who were not at all amused by some of the jokes. When looking back at Brady’s time on the Patriots, there were quite a few comments made about Aaron Hernandez.
Hernandez’s Controversial Past Was The Butt Of Several Jokes
Nikki Glaser, Julian Edelman, and Tom Brady himself brought up Aaron Hernandez, making light of a dark time in Patriots’ history.
Glaser joked about Hernandez’s matter of death. The late NFL player died in jail in 2017 after being convicted of murder. The former New England Patriots tight end — who was replaced by Brady’s more notable collaborator, Rob Gronkowski — died by suicide, leaving behind a fiancée and a daughter.

Edelman took a similar approach.

When Brady took the stage to fire back at the evening’s entertainers, he quipped about Gronkowski stepping into the role when the team needed him.

The NFL Player’s Fiancée, the Mother of His Child, Found The Jokes To Be ‘Cruel’
Shayanna Jenkins was Aaron Hernandez’s fiancée at the time of his death. The two share a daughter, Avielle. Jenkins told TMZ that the now-11-year-old will inevitably find out about these jokes online. She believes that’s a fact no one considered when writing the jokes for the event.
It’s sad that I’m trying to raise my children in such a cruel world.

Surely, it isn’t easy for the pre-teen to comprehend her father’s complicated history. Aaron Hernandez was, for a time, simultaneously regarded as a talented athlete and an alleged monster. Hearing that in and of itself could be tough, but hearing it joked about lightly could understandably be difficult. There’s no indication at this time that any apologies will be issued.
