DC Supergirl Actor Takes Villain Role ‘Too Seriously,’ Sentenced to Prison as Convicted Criminal: ‘Embracing the Character!’

Life imitates art

As the saying goes, “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life,” and that might be the case for the villain actor of DC Supergirl, Matthias Schoenaerts. The celebrity, who played prominent roles in the films Rust and Bone, The Old Guard, and Bullhead, has been sentenced to six months in prison for driving without a license multiple times. According to Collider, Schoenaerts has been convicted around a dozen times for driving-related offenses, including DUI, driving in places he was banned from driving, and being uncooperative with authorities.

Schoenaerts’ arrest and sentence to prison won’t affect the release of Supergirl in July 2026, considering how the filming has already been completed. Murphy’s Multiverse shares that insider Daniel Richtman believes the DCU version of Schoenaerts’ character, Krem of the Yellow Hills, “looks more like a monster” and “[carries] dead alien rats with him to eat,” which is quite more gnarly than how he appeared in the comics. Of course, Schoenaerts is no “monster” of sorts, but many believe he’s portraying the role of villain rather skillfully, albeit in an ironic fashion.

“He’s taking his role seriously,” jokes one Redditor. “Embracing the character!!! Look at this guy channeling his Daniel day Lewis,” exclaimed a second. “It’s the canon event of DC,” remarks a third. “Great to see everyone involved cares so much about comic accuracy,” laughs a fourth. On the other hand, one person believes Schoenaerts’ sentence is being overly blown out of proportion, saying that driving offenses are the “least controversial thing.” However, illegally driving, especially after instances of DUI, is most certainly “controversial,” seeing how other people’s lives are being put on the line by the actor’s recklessness.

Supergirl Actor Matthias Schoenaerts Might Be Out of Prison Before His Sentence Is Over

One Reddit user claiming to be Belgian like Supergirl star Matthias Schoenaerts argues that the actor probably won’t go to prison, as anything less than 3 years as a prison sentence means “you’ll walk.” “He will most likely get an ankle monitor for 6 months,” the commenter predicts. Another user adds that the reason is that Belgian prisons are already too full, so keeping someone in for a “lesser crime” is a waste of space. Still, a convicted criminal is a convicted criminal, but only time will tell whether the actor’s actions will lead the movie to be seen in a negative light by the general public. But most likely not.

As of writing, DC Studios has yet to release any statements on the matter. Yet, the fact that Schoenaerts has gotten in trouble with the law multiple times in the past does display either ignorance or condoning of crime, which is not a good look.
