Square Enix revealed a new RPG that’s in development with the working title of Project Prelude Rune. This is a debut project for Square Enix’s newly established Studio Istolia, which is based out of Tokyo. The studio is being led by Hideo Baba, who formerly worked at Namco Bandai as a brand manager and then as a producer for the Tales series.
The official press release explains that “Studio Istolia further builds on Square Enix Group’s vision to create new intellectual properties alongside existing Square Enix studios.” The statement adds that Hideo Baba has over “18 years of experience in game development”, and notes that he will not only serve as the studio head but as the producer for Project Prelude Rune as well.
The game has been pegged as a new fantasy IP, with a story that unfolds across vast and vibrant landscapes. The inhabitants of this land seem to have a strong, moral compass as they fight for justice and allow the earth to sustain and nourish them.
The announcement of yet another RPG to Square Enix’s large repertoire of games comes as somewhat of a surprise, especially amidst the continued success and buzz surrounding Final Fantasy XV, and the remake of Final Fantasy VII which is still development. Istolia may be its own newly established studio, but we can only hope the announcement of this new RPG takes away nothing from the continued (and tedious) development of Kingdom Hearts.
Square Enix also said in the official press release that “the aim of the studio is to provide unforgettable stories that will inspire players in their own lives and bring new game experiences to everyone around the world.” The release mentions how the name “Istolia” comes from the Greek word for “story”, and how this is integral to the values of the studio as a whole.
