Dragon’s Dogma released January 1, 2012, for the 360, PS3 and PC. It’s an open-world fantasy RPG centering around the Arisen, whose hearts are bound to the dragon Grigori, including the player. Ever seen the movie Dragonheart? It’s basically that, only the human’s heart is removed instead of the dragon’s being split. So that’s the “dragon” part of Dragon’s Dogma. And the “dogma” part? Well… aforementioned Grigori gives the player a choice: fight him, or sacrifice their in-game lover and be granted the Gransys Dukedom. Oh yeah, and keep your immortality to boot. And now that you’re all caught up, here be dragons.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Dragon% Speedrun 1:23:36

So this is a Dragon% run, meaning the player begins a new game and plays up until slaying Grigori. There’s more to Dragon’s Dogma after his demise, but that’s the point where this category stops. Other runs include NG and NG+, and the Dark Arisen DLC run. The dragon% runner, lolic0nplex, holds the record for this category at an hour and fourteen minutes, a handful faster than the above video. The secret to blasting through the game quickly: blast arrows, of course. Fun Fact: there’s also a speed run mode included in Dragon’s Dogma that lets players use a save file to go as fast as they can. Items used up during this mode are returned to them once the run is completed, so it’s like an optional bonus available at any time.

Seems like there are almost as many open-world WRPGs out there now as there are FPSs. Okay, maybe not quite that many, but plenty nonetheless. But that’s because people like to play these kinds of games so much. Why, it’s almost as if these games have taken our hearts and bound us to them forever…

Don’t have time to go on an entire epic adventure? How about these over-in-a-flash runs of Myst? Who knew a game could be beaten that quickly?
