Former Oscar nominee Morgan Spurlock was confirmed dead at 53 by his brother this Thursday. Many people might not know how big of a name he was in the industry, but back in 2004, he directed and wrote the award-winning Super Size Me documentary. In it, he ate nothing but McDonald’s meals for 30 days, showing people the effects of this fast food chain on one’s health. Sadly, on the morning of May 24, 2024, his brother confirmed his passing due to complications from cancer.

After his passing in Upstate New York, Spurlock’s family, especially his brother, has given statements regarding the matter.
“It was a sad day as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan. He [Morgan] gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. Today, the world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.”

Super Size Me was undoubtedly one of his biggest documentary works. Inspired after seeing a lawsuit of two women suing McDonald’s as the culprit behind their obesity, Morgan Spurlock decided to embark on a journey to see how unhealthy ingesting this fast food would be on the human body for a month. During the documentary, he gained 25 pounds and developed liver problems. While the documentary didn’t win an Oscar, Morgan Spurlock won Best Documentary Screenplay at the Writers Guild of America. The legacy of this documentary caused the worldwide fast food chain to remove supersized portions from all menus and even inspired a show on the BBC called The Supersizers.
Besides that documentary, Morgan Spurlock went on to produce and direct many other works. Some of the most notable include Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? and The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. In 2017, Spurlock stepped down as a filmmaker after admitting to being involved in situations of sexual misconduct as part of the #MeToo movement. In it, he admitted to having cheated on his previous wives and girlfriends. Of these marriages, he fathered two sons, Laken James Spurlock and Kallen Marcus Spurlock.
