Five years later, the star bared all again for the 1996 film Striptease. Moore’s shown she’s not afraid to strip down for the sake of art. While many actresses would have a problem with nudity in film roles, Moore likes it.
In a recent interview with The Sun, the G.I. Jane star reveals she likes roles that push boundaries.
I’ve always looked for roles that pushed me out of my comfort zone, and are also thoughtful and provocative. If I look at something and it scares me a little bit, I usually know that maybe there’s something in it. Because if I don’t do things where I step out of my own comfort zone, then I can’t grow. It’s not always easy watching yourself. But it’s exciting. It’s wonderful to feel the excitement.
Now at 61 years old, she’s stripping down again for the upcoming horror film The Substance. In the movie, Demi plays Elisabeth Sparkle, an aging Hollywood starlet who takes a black-market anti-aging drug. The medicine turns her into a younger version of herself, played by Margaret Qualley.
One pivotal scene has Elisabeth, then her younger self examining themselves naked. Although Moore has appeared nude onscreen before, she had some fears about doing it again. But she credits her co-star Qualley with making her feel comfortable.
I had a great partner in Margaret, who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close – naked. We got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were. Going into it, it was really spelled out, the level of vulnerability and rawness that was required to tell the story.
The Substance premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last week and received a 13-minute standing ovation. The movie won Best Screenplay at Cannes and come award season, it could be a leading contender, including an Oscar nomination for Moore. Fans can see Demi’s performance when The Substance hits theaters later this year.
