  • Might Morphin’ Power Rangers Release Window

One of the biggest surprises during the Summer Game Fest was the reveal of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind, an old-school beat-’em-up brimming with nostalgic charm. This game is a throwback to the ’90s, a time when the Power Rangers were at their peak, cool things were called groovy, and “Talk to the Hand” was a solid comeback. It doesn’t stop there, however, as the game exudes retro style with every frame and sound.

The recent resurgence of classic beat ’em ups, like Streets of Rage 4 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, has laid the groundwork for Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind. Taking a cue from these successful reboots, the new Power Rangers game aims to capture the essence of what made these games stand the test of time and remain so memorable after so long. It isn’t hard to see the inspiration from the recent TMNT game in Rita’s Rewind, and it’s all the more reason to be excited about it.

The retro design invokes memories of the look and feel of the older Power Rangers games from the SNES and SEGA Genesis era. Expect barrels to explode on contact, random advertisements for Crunchy Fried Chicken, along with menacing bosses that change their size at will, and a plethora of different enemy types. What sets it apart from the recent throwbacks are the detailed animations for transformations and other iconic sequences. Bosses also have their own beautifully animated intros, adding to the game’s narrative flair.

In typical beat ‘em up fashion, the game includes stages that shake up the side-scrolling formula. Players will find themselves in fast-moving vehicle sections or riding elevators, adding variety to the gameplay. However, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind doesn’t stop there.

The game incorporates third-person running and gunning sections, as well as third-person driving segments, to keep players on their toes. The most surprising element is the inclusion of first-person sequences when the Power Rangers combine into the Megazord. This shift in perspective is brief but maintains the game’s art style, and isn’t like anything we’ve ever seen before.

Classic games like Contra, TMNT, Streets of Rage, and now Power Rangers have made a massive comeback, and there are plenty more where these came from. There is clearly interest and demand in reliving games from the ’90s but remade for a new era. Sega has already confirmed it is working on remakes for old games like Golden Axe and Shinobi.

Hopefully, the trailer didn’t reveal every single curveball, and we can expect more surprises once we finally get our hands on the game. Some of the older Power Ranger games had side-scrolling sections in which we would control our Zords while toppling buildings and facing off against opponents as tall as skyscrapers.

Digital Eclipse, the developer behind the game, did not confirm the platforms on which Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind will launch in the Summer Game Fest trailer. An official release date has also not been announced. However, it is expected that the game will launch sometime in late 2024 if it isn’t pushed into 2025. For now, adding Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind to your Steam wishlist is a step toward reliving those action-packed Saturday mornings in a new and improved way.
