Dark and Darker features several cool classes to pick to handle any way you want to play. But do you want to bask in the power that comes from magic? You have a handful of classes that boast the ability. They’re not all made the same though. Some are more forgiving for beginners while others are only useful in the hands of pros. Once you master the spell system in Dark and Darker, you can equip and cast spells to take down any enemy and help allies.

During the pre-alpha phase, Dark and Darker only had two classes that could wield magic. Now, that number has increased to four:

  • Wizard
  • Cleric
  • Warlock
  • Druid

You can select any of the four if you want to throw magic around in a match. Before we can learn how to cast spells in Dark and Darker, we must first equip them. With your chosen character, head to the Class menu. There, you will notice two skill slots. You can equip up to five spells in each slot. Simply drag and place a spell into an empty slot to equip it.

Even if you equip spells that doesn’t mean you can cast them in Dark and Darker. You’ll need the Spell Memory skill from the Perk & Skill menu. Each skill slot needs its own Spell Memory. Otherwise, the slot will remain red and you cannot use the spells in a match.

Another thing you’ll notice is cost. All spells have a cost from 1-6 and you have an overall cost limit. The cost is how much your Spell Memory that the spells take up. If your limit isn’t high, you might be unable to fill all five spell slots.

As long as you have the Spell Memory for it, you can freely cast numerous spells in Dark and Darker. Casting in general is straightforward:

  1. Press the skill slot button (Q or E) to show the spell wheel
  2. Hover your mouse over the spell you want to use and let go
  3. Hold your right mouse button to cast the spell you selected

Watch the number on your spells. It will tell you how many times you can cast it before you must replenish it. Things like Resting at a Campfire can restore your spells. However, some classes can help. For instance, Wizards can restore themselves with Meditation. Bards can help restore the spells of any class.

Spell System and Magic Tips

Thankfully, none of the magic users in Dark and Darker play the same. It’s perfect because you can experience something new with each of the four classes.

It’s recommended that beginners start with something like Druid or Cleric. These are a bit more forgiving compared to Wizard and Warlock. Warlock especially as you’ll drain your own health using that class, so you’ll have to learn how to judge when’s the right time to use certain spells.

We know that we must increase our cost limit to bring more spells. So, focus on improving your Knowledge stat. The two are connected and the higher your Knowledge, the higher your cost limit. With practice, you should be able to find the class you’re most comfortable with whether it’s buffing allies or landing devastating blows to your enemies.

Dark and Darker is available on PC.
