Earlier today, Microsoft announced a ton of new information about their newest revamp of the Xbox system: Project Scorpio. In a report published to Eurogamer on Thursday morning, Microsoft dropped some major news on the specs for their newest system along with a price point and potential release window. Microsoft did more than comparing Scorpio to the PlayStation 4 Pro, they are promising to surpass it completely So, here is everything we know so far…Are you ready?
Xbox Scorpio was first announced at E3 last June where they promised the new system would be a revamped version of the Xbox One. Despite all of the information given on the system today, an official name still has not been released. However, we were given a look at what we can expect from Scorpio upon release. The newest system from Microsoft will be able to play games in 4k resolution along with VR support. In order for this to happen, Scorpio will come with 6 teraflops of processing power and more than 320 GB/s of memory bandwidth. Here are the more technical specs according to Polygon, “The console’s CPU has eight custom x86 cores clocked at 2.3 GHz, while the GPU features 40 Radeon compute units at 1172 MHz. The system also has 12 GB of GDDR5 memory, and contains a 1 TB 2.5-inch hard drive and a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive.”

When it comes to games, Microsoft is promising they won’t be making any Scorpio exclusives. They have been very adamant about the fact that they don’t want anyone left behind; Scorpio is nowhere near a new console. However, there will be plenty to keep you busy on the Scorpio. The system can play any Xbox One games along with any of the Xbox 360 games that have been made backwards-compatible. Gamers can expect a major boost in their gaming experience as Microsoft is promising that games will now run much faster. Unfortunately, we still have not seen any actual gameplay on the revamped system as of yet; so as of right now, we have to take Microsoft’s word on things. Also, Scorpio will be doing away with a Kinect port.
When it comes to cost, Microsoft didn’t announce an exact price point. However, Digital Foundry, a branch of Eurogamer, was able to come up with an estimate of what the new system might cost. Because of what we have seen what specs we can expect from the new system, they estimated that the system will cost around $500. While this is just an estimate, it is about $100 more than the PlayStation 4 Pro. While this isn’t a terrible price point, it’s still pretty pricey. However, Microsoft is promising that Scorpio is bigger and better than any console on the market right now.
Microsoft didn’t announce an official name for the newest system or a release date. Digital Foundry speculated that we can expect to see the console releasing during the Holiday season of this year. Despite all of this new information, there is still a lot to be seen from Scorpio. I’m guessing Microsoft will have a pretty interesting event at E3 this summer!
