Charlamagne Tha God and Tyla are in the news again. This time, the media personality is clearing the air about his interview with the singer. Recall that Tyla had an awkward experience earlier in June while chatting with the host of The Breakfast Club. During the interview, Charlamagne Tha God asked about Tyla’s identity as a colored South African woman. “School me on these debates that they be having about your identity as a South African colored person,” the radio host asked. However, instead of answering the question, Tyla looked back to a team member, off camera, to help her respond.
The publicist clarified that the singer would not answer questions about that topic. Charlamagne Tha God agreed to move on, but Tyla’s actions sparked a controversy online. Many speculated that the singer was denying her blackness, prompting her to issue an explanation later on. Amid the drama, the radio host has opened up about the controversial interview. During an appearance on The Brilliant Idiots podcast, the 45-year-old addressed comments about him blindsiding Tyla with his question. “All I was doing was trying to give her an opportunity to clear it up because they said that’s been a thing for her,” Charlamagne Tha God explained.
He further revealed that Tyla’s team gave him six “don’t ask” topics before the interview. According to the media personality, Tyla’s identity was one of the topics he needed to avoid asking about. However, Charlamagne Tha God revealed he outrightly refused the team’s request. “For this one, I said, ‘no.’ The reason I said no is that they had six things they didn’t want us to ask… So I said to them, ‘no,'” he said. Charlamagne Tha God noted that upon his refusal to oblige, it was down to the management to prepare the artist for the questions or pull out of the interview. “I’m fine with either. I already told you I’m not going to follow any of this,” he said.
The radio host finished by explaining that he had a job to do, which was for the people. Hence, he would never please record labels at the loss of his audience.
