The World Video Game Hall of Fame announced its 2017 class, including five classic video games, chosen for their popularity, longevity and their impact on the industry. Halo Combat Evolved, Pokemon Red and Blue, Donkey Kong and Street Fighter II make up the entirety of this year’s class.

Established on June 4, 2015, The World Video Game Hall of Fame was built in Rochester, New York, USA and commended each inductee with its own video game. Its inaugural entrants were Doom, Pong, Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros, Tetris and World of Warcraft. With the addition of this years, five games – counting Red and Blue as individual products – The World Video Games Hall of Fame now has 16 permanent exhibits.

Pokemon and Donkey Kong join fellow Nintendo games Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, adding to the companies ever growing legacy.

Nominations are simple to earn, as anyone can nominate a game, yet the final selection is made by an advisory group made up of journalist, academics and gaming experts. This year’s winners were chosen from a list of 12 other finalists, beating out the likes of Final Fantasy VII and Wii Sports.

Wii Sports fell just short this year

Like any other Hall of Fame, plenty of the classics don’t make it in on their first attempt. Pokemon was nominated in 2016 but failed to make that year’s final selection, so there’s still hope for the classics that have attempted to join the HOF.

Do you agree with the 2017 list? Who do you think got snubbed?Which games would you like to see make the Hall of Fame next year? Be sure to let us know in the comments, and check back to the site for all of your other Nerdy News!
