Amazon Studios has revealed that they will be creating a television show based on the film Hanna. The film, directed Joe Wright, told the story of a young girl raised in the Finnish wildlands and trained by her father – an ex-spy – to become the perfect assassin.
While Hanna didn’t do wonders at the box office, it was praised for its unique premise and twisted take on modern princesses. Since its 2011 release, it’s garnered a cult following, prompting Amazon Studios and NBCUniversal International Studios to jump on creating another piece of entertainment involving the property. Variety reports that the studio’s President Michael Edelstein is very excited about the project.
“From the moment JoAnn Alfano and I saw Hanna it was evident that the film would make an incredible TV series.” Said NBCUniversal International Studio’s President. Fortunately, David Farr felt there was more Hanna story to tell and wanted to revisit this extraordinary world.”
We’ve known since March that the project was coming after it was revealed to be in the process of being created by David Farr, best known for his work writing The Night Manager. But while we know it will revolve around the events of the film, it’s entirely uncertain what it’s exact focus is in regards to the film.
Given the revelation at the end of the film that Hanna was a part of a decommissioned project to create super soldier children, it’s entirely possible that the show could focus on other children in the experiment. That means it’s could be a story that runs parallel to Hanna’s from the viewpoint of another child – with the possibility to overlap at some point – or it could continue to tell her story in prequel or sequel form.
It’s an interesting situation to speculate considering Saoirse Ronan, the actress who played 15-year-old Hanna, is now seven years older. As of now, there is no casting information regarding any of the characters set to star in the television show either.
