Tom Cruise may no longer be an active part of his daughter’s life, but he’s still making a contribution. The action star is reportedly footing the bill for Suri Cruise‘s tuition at the esteemed Carnegie Mellon University. Although Tom is no longer financially responsible for paying child support to the 18-year-old, he’s not out of the woods yet when it comes to his obligations to his only biological child.
According to The Daily Mail, Tom Cruise is paying for Suri Cruise’s $65,000 a year tuition fees. The teen recently moved into her dorm at the Pennsylvania university, and her mother, Katie Holmes, helped her get situated. However, Tom was nowhere to be seen, and he and Suri have reportedly not spent time together in about 12 years.
Tom Cruise Shelling out Big Money for Suri Cruise’s College Tuition
The Top Gun star has been heavily criticized for being an absent parent to Suri over the years. However, his and Katie Holmes’ divorce settlement made it perfectly clear that he was going to use his fortune to financially care for his daughter.
When Tom and Katie divorced in 2012, it was decided that the actor would cover the majority of his daughter’s expenses. This includes medical, dental, insurance, extracurricular costs, and her education.
“Tom is indeed paying for Suri’s tuition. He has always paid for her schooling and would never stop as he is a stand-up guy,” a friend of the actor told the outlet. “He has never hesitated paying his daughter’s child support and expenses. He does not go back on his word. He is fulfilling his obligation.”
Meanwhile, some fans aren’t convinced that the actor’s willingness to pay for his daughter’s schooling makes him a “stand-up guy.” Instead, they think it’s the least he could do.
“Glad to hear it. Whether it was part of the divorce settlement or not, it’s the right thing for him to do,” one person commented.
“It’s his job as a parent even a absent one. It was his choice to stay way,” another stated.
“Are we supposed to admire Tom Cruise for shouldering his responsibility to a child he helped to create and bring into the world? He has the financial resources; he has the DUTY to financially support her,” a third comment read.
