Fans know Neill Blomkamp as the mind behind fan favorite film District 9 and the loosely tied Matt Damon movie Elysium, but he has been teasing a mysterious project for a while now. He released the first trailer for the experimental filmmaking venture titled Oats Studio, detailing some of the studio’s upcoming projects.
The projects will delve in the supernatural, from aliens to monsters, which isn’t entirely surprising given Blomkamp’s history, especially as he got his start with a short film about aliens, Alive in Joburg (Later District 9). The first look at Oats Studio’s short films opens up with a shot of a dilapidated Eiffel Tower, as a narrator explains that aliens have arrived to conquer and destroy humanity.
The trailer goes on to explain that all of the footage shown is a part of a series of short experimental films called Oats: Volume 1. It’s first trailer also shows off a lizard-like creature, as well as a voice-over stating “The new world altered everyone. Adapt or die. Simple as that.”
Blomkamp first revealed the project last year after asking fans if they would be interested in purchasing short films off the (majorly) gaming platform Steam. Alongside the question, the director posted never before seen photos from a mystery project that turned out to be Oats Studio. The images he posted turned out to be one of the aliens seen in the trailer, as well as a Vietnam soldier.
This may just be the perfect time for Oats Studio to break out, not only on the ever growing Steam platform but with its subject matter as well. Given that Superhero movies have ruled the theaters for years now, it might just be a time for Monster movies to make a comeback.
Universal Studios certainly think so, as they recently announced their Dark Universe surrounding the company’s monster films.
It’ll be interesting to see if Blomkamp is able to find success on the unique platform, and with the currently underlooked style of short films. For more information, be sure to check back to the site for updates on Oats Studio, as well as all of your other Nerdy News!
