In an industry currently heavily fueled by nostalgia, it was only a matter of time before television executive plumbed our favorite Saturday morning cartoon channels for reboots. There is no channel more illustrious than The WB (now The CW) and no more beloved franchise on the programming than the Animaniacs.

Yakko, Wakko, and Dot were the unofficial mascots for the WB back in the 90’s – alongside Pinky and the Brain – as the trio were up to many goofy adventures from 1995 and 1998 on the network. The show, which also aired on  Fox Kids for two years prior, ran for ninety-nine episodes, including one movie spinoff titled Wakko’s Wish in 1999.

Animaniacs

In the near two decades since they’ve been gone, reruns of Animaniacs appeared on Netflix, rekindling a lost love for many 90’s kids and likely prompting talks of a Reboot based on the numbers. According to IndieWire, an Animaniacs reboot is being developed by Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation and will bring back Steven Spielberg to assist on the project.

The famed Indiana Jones director played a large role in the original series run, as it was produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Television studio. The studio is also in charge of all of Spielberg’s movie projects as well, from E.T to Jurassic World, as well as a few others not directed by him.

Animaniacs

It’s not entirely confirmed as to how the new show will differ from the old one, aside from the modern relevancy of the jokes and storylines, but one could hope they would keep the variety Animaniacs was known for in its original run. No word on where the reboot will air either, nor if  Robert Fredrick Paulsen III (Yakko),  Tress MacNeille (Dot) or Jess Harnell (Wacko) will return in the starring roles.
