LeBron James and his son Bronny James have already made history as the first father-son duo to play at the same time in NBA history. However, this monumental achievement comes with complications. Luckily, LeBron has the perfect trick to prevent the lines from getting blurred while they are on the court.
Ahead of the next NBA season, the Lakers icon recently revealed what he wants his working relationship with Bronny to be like. In a new episode of The Shop, the four-time NBA champion confessed he wouldn’t want his son calling him “dad” while they are on court.
“We already laid that down. He can’t call me that. He cannot call me dad in the workplace. Once we leave out of the private facility, and the gates close, I could be dad again. At home I could be dad”
What, then, would he call his famous father? Well, LeBron has some interesting options. “No, he gotta call me like, ‘2-3’ or ‘Bron,'” he said. The four-time NBA Finals MVP even joked that Bronny could call him “G.O.A.T.” if he wishes to. Luckily, LeBron doesn’t have that problem, as he has always referred to his mini-me as Bronny.
In June, the 19-year-old was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers as the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
Did LeBron James Pull Strings For His Son’s Career?
LeBron and Bronny’s name saga is quite a unique problem, given that they are first father-son teammates. However, many have accused the 39-year-old of using his influence to get his son into the Lakers. Former NBA player Steven Huntly made the allegations. He claimed that Bronny’s multi-year, fully guaranteed rookie contract was “gifted to him” and not earned.
“I’m sorry… And it’s an egregious abuse of power from LBJ [LeBron James] & Rich Paul. It’s a slap in the face to all of the kids out there who work their a**es off to get to the league. It’s sneaky hollywood s**t like this that turns a lot of people off about Lebron.”
Unfortunately, Bronny’s performance so far hasn’t done anything to quell the allegations. For his Lakers debut, James Jr. had four points on 2-9 shooting and dished out two assists, causing fans to bash. Hopefully, things will be different next season, especially since “dad” won’t be on the court.
