General Hospital has had a lot of cast shakeups within the last month. So far the month of August saw the announcement of three stars from the ABC soap opera. First, there was Jacqueline Grace Lopez’s exit as Allison “Blaze” Rodgers. Then Adam J. Harrington is reportedly wrapping up his role as Jagger Cates. Then most recently was the announcement of Kelly Monaco’s upcoming leave.
With the show rumored to be making budget cuts, it seems more actors and actresses could be saying goodbye. So who will be the next big named star to get the ax?
Here’s a look at three possible candidates.
3. Sofia Mattsson’s Time as Sasha Gilmore Should End Soon on General Hospital
For the past six years, Sofia Mattsson has been playing Sasha Gilmore on General Hospital. Her character has undergone lots of tragedy, including drug addiction, the death of her infant son, and her husband Brando Corbin’s death.
Last year, she was in a big storyline when her mother-in-law/guardian Gladys Corbin had her committed in order to steal Sasha’s money. After the harrowing ordeal, Sasha’s found happiness and love with Cody Bell. Things have been going peaceful in Sasha’s life, which fans love, yet it seems like there’s no major stories coming up for her.
While Mattsson is a good actress, it might be time for her character to say goodbye to Port Charles. The writers could have her and Cody ride off into the sunset together. Or they could have Sasha realize she’s not ready for dating, then leaves town for a fresh start.
2. Cameron Mathison Has Overstayed His Welcome as Drew Cain
Former All My Children actor Cameron Mathison returned to the soap opera genre in 2021 when cast as Drew Cain on General Hospital. Mathison had a difficult job taking over a role played by the late Billy Miller.
Despite being a big name and pushed front and center, Mathison’s portrayal of Drew has been a flop. The once tough Drew has been reduced to a whimp and borderline creep. While a few viewers like Mathison’s performance, other dislike him.
On Reddit fans voiced their disapproval of the actor.
All of the GH exits. Drew could have disappeared and I wouldn’t even have noticed or questioned what happened.
Another user is surprised Mathison is still on the show.
Why does he get to stay but not RH and ME?
Drew’s return only came about because of Jason Morgan’s departure. But now that his brother is back, there’s really no reason for Drew to stick around.
The affair storyline with Willow Tait, while dramatic, is coming across more weird. This could end up being Drew’s downfall, signaling the end of his congressional run and time in Port Charles.
1. General Hospital Cast Member Cynthia Watros Might Be the Next Actress to Leave
Cynthia Watros joined General Hospital in 2019 as the recast for Nina Reeves. She had big shoes to fill taking over for Michelle Stafford, but quickly made the role her own.
She had big storylines involving Nina’s romance with Sonny Corinthos and discovering Willow was her long-lost daughter. Watros’ performances during these stories earned her two Daytime Emmy nominations and proves she’s a talented actress.
However, after Nina and Sonny’s divorce, the writers haven’t done much with the character. She’s currently involved in a romance with Drew, who is secretly lusting after her daughter Willow. While the storyline is bound to bring more phenomenal work from Watros, the question is what’s next for Nina?
The writers have treated Nina harshly over the years by making her the town pariah. Her feud with Carly Spencer usually saw her come out on the losing end, looking like the villain. The waste of Watros’s talent and character has been a huge criticism among soap fans. If the show doesn’t have anything big planned for Nina or sees no use for her, then Watros could end up on the chopping block.
