On September 11th, Taylor Swift won multiple awards at the MTV VMAs, one of which being the Song of Summer award for “Fortnight” by both Taylor Swift and Post Malone. Now, we’re not surprised, of course, but some people think Taylor didn’t deserve the award, and it should have gone to someone else.
Wednesday evening, loads of people took to X/Twitter to complain about Taylor‘s awards and make their thoughts on her being undeserving of them well-known, and it’s stirred up some drama with the Swifties.
Swifties Fight Back on X
On Wednesday evening a confused X user hopped on an reposted Pop Base’s announcement that Taylor Swift won the VMA for Son of Summer for “Fortnight.” She claims that Swift simply didn’t deserve the award because the user had never even heard the song. “i have never once heard this song and i am so unbelievably chronically online and tapped into pop culture, stop giving this woman awards she doesn’t deserve,” they said. However, the comment section on her post quickly got so wild that she had to mute notifications for comments.
Some users agreed that it was really strange that Taylor won instead of others, “No same I am genuinely not trying to be a hater but I have never heard this damn song ?????” The original poster even went on to talk about alternatives that they thought should have received the award: “like ???? how did espresso not win? look at the streams on that song? the cultural impact it had online? like i don’t even care for it that much but i don’t understand how it didn’t win ???“
Other users came to the OP’s defense and furthered their point with comments like “She’s the leader of a cult that’s why she always wins, in a just and fair world Sabrina wins easily,” pointing out that Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” should have won instead. “Love this song but it should’ve been Espresso,” said another user. Another user piped in and added, “i also agree if we look at all the other artists that was nominated we can honestly say they deserved it more.”
Sure, Taylor Swift might have won more awards than everyone else at the MTV VMAs, but did she really deserve every single one of them?
