The original Saw film is heralded as one of the most unique and disturbing horror films of its time, but too many sequels – which turned into convoluted plot laced, torture porn – have since ruined manyโs opinions on the franchise. Seven years after the last release, the newest installment in the franchise, Jigsaw, looks to refresh the series and bring it back to its 2004 glory.
Rumors had been circulating for well over a year that the franchise would be returning to the silver screen, with the next installment supposedly being called Saw: Legacy. Instead, Lionsgate confirmed that the eight film will be titled Jigsaw, the alias for the serial killer mastermind of the original series John Kramer(Tobin Bell).
Little is know about the plot for the upcoming film, but according to Bloody-Disgusting the synopsis for it does give some hints.
โBodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade. Or has an apprentice picked up the mantle of Jigsaw, perhaps even someone inside the investigation?โ
While Jigsaw has been long dead – dying in Saw III – ย the series, and Kramerโs essence, has been kept alive through a series of pre-recorded messages and apprentices that carry out his will. This begs the question as to whether Jigsaw will continue the franchise’s trend of apprentices doing Kramerโs bidding from beyond the grave, or if a fan of his work has created a copycat killing game.
As always, the film will be Rated-R, so keep your kids and squeamish loved ones as far away from the torture-filled romp as possible when it’s released in theaters October 27, 2017.
