On Monday, Sept. 30, Shawn Mendes opened up about his love life while appearing on the Jay Shetty Podcast. He began by admitting that dating in the public eye has been a “brutal” experience for both him and Cabello. “I think Camila and I have just done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other,” he said.
Mendes explained that one of the hardest parts about dating the Fifth Harmony star has been seeing all of the opinions from fans and the media regarding their on-and-off relationship. “No matter how strong mentally you are, when there are millions of people commenting on it, it’s so hard not to be affected by it,” he confessed. “It’s just human.”
Although Mendes said he and Cabello “worked extremely hard to protect each other,” the noise was sometimes too much. Since there was no escaping the criticism online, Mendes eventually decided to take a step back from social media. The move has seemed to be a good decision for the singer since he’s been able to really focus on the things that matter.
“I don’t really see or care what people say about my love life or my relationships [anymore] because it’s honestly too detrimental to the actual relationship itself,” he said. “I’ve become pretty strict on that part of it, you know, but it’s crazy, man. This is not a movie.”
Mendes explained that in real life, “love is confusing and hard” and it goes through many ups and downs. He appeared to be referencing his and Cabello’s makeups and breakups over the years.

They hung out several times over the course of two months before they broke up for good that June. Since then, the stars have maintained a good relationship by having nothing but kind words to say about each other.
