Metaphor: ReFantazio was released today on October 11, 2024, and within a single day it has already become the fastest-selling game Atlus has ever made. At the time of writing, the game has already sold over 1 million units on its very first day. This news comes from Atlus and Sega and confirms that this includes both physical sales as well as digital downloads.

When compared to its contemporaries, Persona 5, when it was first released in Japan, sold over 500,000 units in its month of release. This isn’t bad by any means, but it just goes to show how much fans wanted to get their hands on Metaphor, which is a new game and a new IP. Persona 5 did release over 1.5 million units in its first month when it was released worldwide, which, although impressive, is overshadowed by Metaphor: ReFantazio.

Before Metaphor: ReFantazio, the game by Atlus that was the most successful in terms of sales was Persona 4: Golden, which sold 800,000 units back in 2014. Since then, it has been re-released onto modern platforms.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is a spiritual successor to the long-running Persona series and will likely become a franchise moving forward. According to leaks and rumors, Atlus is currently working on remakes of the original Persona and Persona 2, and this will be a perfect way to separate the two franchises instead of running them concurrently.

In our review of Metaphor: ReFantazio we gave it a remarkable score of 10, and called it a once-in-a-lifetime RPG. Even though the genre has a million games, this one goes out of its way to innovate and differentiate itself. If you’re interested in the Persona series or just JRPGs in general, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Metaphor: ReFantazio came out today October 11, 2024, and is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
