Most of Hollywood is still struggling with Donald Trump‘s return to the White House. Now, Dick Van Dyke says he doesn’t want to be alive to see that reality happen. The veteran actor recently gave his thoughts on the election results, expressing his disgust at the convicted felon being president.
Van Dyke, while out with his wife, Arlene Silver, was asked, “Does the future look bright for America?” The actor, who is set to turn 99 next month, responded, “I hope you’re right!” When asked again, “Do you think Donald Trump is capable of making America great again?” Per Daily Mail, the Mary Poppins actor answered:
“Fortunately, I won’t be around to experience the four years.”
It comes as no surprise that Dyke feels this way about a Trump presidency. Recall that he endorsed Kamala Harris a day before the elections. Often known to keep a low profile, the Disney Legend came out of hiding to share a surprising message. In a black-and-white video, he looked vibrant while comparing the current political climate to that of 1964 when he joined Martin Luther King Jr for a speech. Dyke read part of the speech to his followers, encouraging them to vote blue.
“Hatred is not the norm. Prejudice is not the norm. Suspicion, dislike, jealousy [and] scapegoating,” he read. “None of those are the transcendent facets of the human personality. They are diseases. They are the cancers of the soul.”
Fans Mock Dick Van Dyke’s Death Wish Because Of Donald Trump
Dick Van Dyke’s comment has since gone viral, and MAGA fans online have slammed him for being dramatic.
“Loved him for so long, I wish he didn’t come out to support Harris, But I can’t hold that against him, active for his age but clearly losing his marbles,” a fan wrote.
“Well, he’s 98, he might get his wish. And if I looked to be in as bad shape as he appears (even though he’s still mobile and coherent), I wouldn’t want to live much longer either,” another comment read.
“Yikes, love ya & don’t agree with you, but at your age, be careful of what you wish for,” warned another commenter.
Dyke’s harsh remark about Trump’s presidency comes after he sparked health concerns. In September, the beloved actor bailed out of his first public appearance outside of Los Angeles in months due to old age. The Dick Van Dyke Show host was due to appear at a three-day FanX event in Salt Lake City. However, just days before the event, a statement was released saying he wouldn’t make it. “He expresses his gratitude to all of those who continue to support him but, at almost 99 years of age, traveling and interacting with thousands of people is more than he is able to do at this time,” it read.
