The upcoming project from ex-Mass Effect lead writer, Mac Walters, is apparently “pausing operations” due to lack of funds, and will remain in limbo until a new partner can be found. The statement was made by Walters, who used to be a senior developer on multiple Dragon Age and Mass Effect games. He explained that his new studio, dubbed Worlds Untold, needs more funding to explore new opportunities.

The developer made the announcement via LinkedIn when he said that the team has made the difficult decision to put all operations at Worlds Untold on hold until they have the funding they need to bring their vision to life.

The Worlds Untold studio was revealed in 2023, and it confirmed that it was working on a AAA action-adventure game that focuses on narrative, in partnership with NetEase. But the development isn’t going anywhere now, as the people working on the game are now exploring new opportunities.

Although Walters has high hopes for the future of the studio, it may be the end of the newly created team if something doesn’t change soon. He reiterated that “while we’re pausing for now, this isn’t goodbye, there’s more to come, and we look forward to sharing the next chapter with you when the time is right.”

Worlds Untold, when it was revealed, was touted as a fully remote game development studio based in Vancouver, Canada. Mac Walters previously worked at BioWare for almost 20 years, and he played a key role in the development of the original Mass Effect. Since he also worked on the entire Mass Effect trilogy, fans were quite excited about a new game from the new studio.

This isn’t the only studio that recently shut down because of a lack of funding, as Humanoid Origin, another new studio made by BioWare GM Casey Hudson also closed its doors permanently this week.
