FromSoftware Has No Plans to Work on ‘Elden Ring 2,’ Director Confirms

Put these foolish ambitions to rest

This article is over 1 years old and may contain outdated information.

Despite Shadow of the Erdtree DLC‘s massive success, its developer confirmed there are no current plans for Elden Ring 2 or a sequel. This information was relayed during the 30th PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 event in Japan, where the DLC won the Grand Award prize. When asked by Japanese media GAME Watch, director Hidetaka Miyazaki said that he and his team have no intention of working on the game’s sequel.

“At this point, we are not considering developments for Elden Ring 2,” Miyazaki revealed. This is a contrast to the Dark Souls series, which ended up being released as a full-blown trilogy, each with an accompanying expansion DLC. Still, that doesn’t mean the franchise will be left in the dust entirely — as long as someone is willing to explore it. He then added, “However, this does not mean we are entirely denying the development of the Elden Ring IP.”

While fans may be disappointed at the lack of immediate plans for a sequel, Miyazaki assured that FromSoftware’s other projects are just as exciting. “FromSoftware is currently running multiple projects as usual, and among them, there are various variations of projects,” explains Miyazaki.

He even said that these projects will cover a ‘wide variety’ of genres as well. I think we can expect the studio to go beyond its signature grim fantasy settings

Shadow of the Erdtree DLC itself, praised for its ambitious scale and depth, was designed to deliver an ‘adventurous experience.’ Miyazaki explained the difficulty of crafting something that matched the scope of the base game while still feeling fresh. “The volume was meant to create a sense of adventure characteristic of Elden Ring. This level of content was necessary to achieve that goal,” he shared.

Given its scope, some speculated whether it was originally planned as Elden Ring 2, a sequel, or a new game retooled into DLC. Nevertheless, Miyazaki quickly dismissed the idea. “It was originally developed as DLC,” he said. “I never considered selling it as a separate title.”

For now, fans will have to wait and see how the studio continues to expand its creative horizons. Elden Ring 2 may rest, but who knows how FromSoftware — or other developers — would expand the franchise in other ways.
