World of Tank Developers Announce Steel Hunters, a Battle Royale Mech Shooter Like None Other

They aren’t more than what meets the eye

The Game Awards 2024 finally reveals the next project from the developer of World of Tanks, Wargaming, called Steel Hunters with a beta. The new title is a mix between battle royale and hero shooters with a big helping of mechs. The upcoming game is third-person and has quite a sense of scale, something the developer is quite proud of.

Steel Hunters is made using Epic’s Unreal Engine 5, so visually, the game is impressive. It features skill trees, a ton of customizable gear, skins, and a growing roster of hunters. The hunters in question are the “heroes” you can pick, and they are all fairly diverse, even though we’ve only seen a few for now. One is canine-like, another is bipedal, and there is even one that looks a lot like a spider.

The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where something called Starfall — no, it isn’t related to Starfield — is the new oil that makes the world go round. It is necessary for humanity to survive and is the central focus of Steel Hunters’ narrative.

Steel Hunters will first be released on PC, with a beta test planned for late December. Future console versions are also planned. The beta will have 7 hunters, and since it is a live service game, it will keep getting more hunters as time goes on.

Those who get the game can access all the content in Steel Hunters without spending any real-world money. But those who want to expedite the process can spend actual money and get access to everything as quickly as possible.

Matches are a bit different than one might expect, as players play in teams, and the objective is to be the first team to get extracted. Only one team can succeed, and a massive mech called The Colossus plays a pivotal role in deciding which team wins, and it shows up some time at the end of a game.

Hunter synergy is an important part of the game, and Duos who play together need to keep them in mind when picking hunters. Each has its own strengths, weaknesses, and synergies. You can get more information on the Steel Hunters closed beta from the official website here.
