After the Success of Black Myth: Wukong, a Cheap Copycat Quickly Shows up on Nintendo Eshop

It’s not even subtle…

When something becomes popular and successful, someone will inevitably try copying it. Black Myth: Wukong is one of the best games released in 2024, and someone has the great idea of launching a cheap copy called Wukong Sun: Black Legend. Even the title is already suspiciously similar to the hit game that many fans consider their Game of the Year. Another thing that makes the game seem like a copycat is the promotional artwork the developer chose for their Nintendo eShop page. Although it’s not a direct copy, it still resembles Black Myth: Wukong‘s promotional artwork.

To be fair, both games draw inspiration from the same old Chinese novel, Journey to the West. It features Sun Wukong as one of its main characters, and his duty is to accompany Tang Sanzang in delivering Buddhist scriptures. There is also the fact that Wukong Sun: Black Legend is a 2D side-scroller action game. Unfortunately, while we can’t consider the game a blatant plagiarism, it still somewhat tries to mislead customers into believing it has a connection to Black Myth: Wukong.

The developer of Wukong Sun: Black Legend is Global Game Studio, and it has only released one game on Nintendo eShop. There are currently very few details of this studio online. There are two mobile developers with the same name, but it’s unclear whether they are the same company that made this game.

Fans who have noticed the existence of Wukong Sun: Black Legend quickly poke fun at the similarities. “We have Wukong at home vibes,” one commenter wrote on ResetEra, “but totally different.” Another said they expected a wacky 3D knockoff since that would be more entertaining. Others wondered how long this copy would last, considering Nintendo’s history of quickly removing blatant copies of popular games.

Black Myth: Wukong isn’t the only one who got cheap knockoffs appearing on Nintendo eShop. A popular indie game, Unpacking, also got its fair share of copies. The developer even begged Nintendo to address this issue on Bluesky after the company failed to remove the knockoffs for more than two weeks.
