As fans of the BBC hit Sherlock anxiously await news of the fourth series (or season), Mark Gatiss, who co-created Sherlock as well as portrays the detective’s brother, Mycroft Holmes, released a statement about the upcoming Sherlock special, scheduled to air sometime this year.
“The series is set in 1895,” said Gatiss, correcting a previous assumption that the special was taking place ten years earlier, in 1885.
We know from previous statements that this special will take place in the Victorian era, but until now didn’t know when, and the date couldn’t be more appropriate.ย 1895 is considered one of the most popular years for Sherlock Holmes, having been killed off by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle inย The Final Problem, where Sherlock battles against his arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty, the character was then brought back and written into additional stories at the behest of the readers. More than just a few of these stories were setย in the year 1895.
Additionally, the number 1895 is the counter on John’s blog in the Sherlock television series, which in itself is a possible homage to poet Vincent Starrett and his work, 221B, in which the last line of the poem reads, “And it is always eighteen ninety-five”.
