SEGA Could Be Bringing Back Cult Hit Dreamcast JRPG To Modern Platforms

SEGA just filed trademarks for Skies of Arcadia and Eternal Arcadia, sparking remaster hope for fans of the long-dormant, sky-traveling cult hit JRPG. The trademark was filed on January 16 but made public on January 24 on Chizai-Watch, which lists filings from the Japan Patent Office. Fans hope this could be the beginning of a long-awaited revival for the series. After all, the Sonic company has been busy preparing for a huge comeback of its classic games.

Still, it’s worth noting that trademark filings don’t always mean a new game is in the works. Companies often do it as a formality to maintain control over their IPs. But, as said before, the timing here feels too perfect to be coincidental. SEGA is busy reviving classic franchises, including Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Shinobi, and Virtua Fighter. With the trademark filing and revival efforts considered, could Skies of Arcadia be the next one to make a comeback?

For the uninitiated, Skies of Arcadia, also known as Eternal Arcadia in Japan, is a turn-based RPG released for the SEGA Dreamcast on October 5, 2000. It was a hidden gem of its time, known for its airship battles, charming cast, and vast skies to explore. The game later received the Skies of Arcadia Legends enhanced port for the GameCube in 2002. But since then, Skies of Arcadia hasn’t been remastered or ported to modern consoles.

The Skies of Arcadia trademark news comes as the JRPG scene has seen a resurgence lately. Atlus’s Metaphor: ReFantazio even won three awards at The Game Awards 2024 and ranked second place in The Nerd Stash’s GOTY 2024. Various remasters and reboots also breathed new life into favorite games like Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D. It wouldn’t be a stretch for SEGA to follow suit, especially given the love this game continues to receive.

Of course, until SEGA officially announces something, this remains pure speculation. Still, whether it’s a remaster or just wishful thinking, the mere idea of soaring through Skies of Arcadia again has us ready to set sail.
