Potentially Lethal Chocolates Recalled in Multiple States Amid Trump’s U.S. Federal Health Communications Ban: ‘common allergens that could have killed someone’

The Food and Drug Administration has elevated the seriousness of its recall of several Cal Yee Farm chocolate products to Class 1. This follows December’s initial Class 2 recall on several products that may have contained undeclared milk, wheat, sesame, soy, FD&C #6, and/or almonds. The threat of undeclared milk warranted the elevation of three products (dark chocolate almonds, dark chocolate apricots, and dark chocolate walnuts) to Class 1. Making things worse, Trump‘s recent ban on federal health agency communications has left many in the dark. Here’s what’s happening.

Cal Yee Farm Chocolate Recall

Today is day 9 of the federal government being ordered to pause communications from health agencies to the public. I will provide daily updates on food and drug safety recalls as well as drug shortages until the communications embargo is lifted. This will likely continue until February one. However, the CDC has not published its critical publication called the morbidity and mortality weekly report in 2 weeks. This is unprecedented. #fda#cdc#recall#tiktokdoc#learnontiktok

According to FDA criteria, Class 1 recalls involve situations “in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” The initial Cal Yee Farm recall, issued in December, affected online shoppers as well as those in nine states: Arizona, California, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Cal Yee Farm addressed the recall on its website, saying the outdated labels which did not specify their possible allergens have been corrected, and “[l]abels are now consistent with known allergens.”

The Trump administration’s recent order to suspend communications from federal health organizations hasn’t helped. If social media reactions are anything to judge by, many weren’t aware of the Cal Yee Farm chocolate recall at all. The Trump administration was already facing scrutiny after a commuter plane and Army Black Hawk helicopter collided in a lethal accident on Wednesday. The incident occurred shortly after Trump fired the Aviation Security Advisory Committee and members of the TSA, causing many to speculate about what role that might have played.

‘It is so infuriating to me’

A TikTok about the product recalls and FDA situation by @rubin_allergy garnered over 16k likes and numerous comments. Many TikTokers expressed frustration and concern over the situation. As one commenter put it,

It is so infuriating to me how these companies can be so careless with labeling for these common allergens that could have killed someone

Milk is one of the FDA’s nine Major Food Allergens, capable of causing symptoms like dizziness, swollen vocal cords, and unconsciousness. Given how diverse the population’s dietary needs and vulnerabilities are, spreading awareness of recalls and other situations affecting public health is a must. As if potentially deadly chocolates weren’t enough, the U.S. is also facing breakouts of bird flu and tuberculosis. Now’s not a great time to make already vulnerable communities even more vulnerable.
