Discovering that your child is missing is already a devastating experience, but it becomes even more heartbreaking to find them deceased. Two-year-old Dane Paulson had been missing since March 1, and on March 11, he was tragically found dead in the Siletz River in Oregon. The toddler disappeared while playing in his home’s front yard. When his parents realized he was missing, they immediately contacted authorities. The search lasted ten days and involved the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, the FBI, and numerous volunteers.
During the search, authorities employed various advanced search technologies, including watercraft, divers, drones, and K9 units. According to a post by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook, a man with a car was found near Dane Paulson’s home at the time of the incident. However, after an investigation, authorities stated that the unknown man was not connected to the missing child case.
Authorities also did not issue an Amber Alert while searching for the missing Oregon child. According to the Lincoln County Sheriff, the boy’s disappearance did not meet the criteria for using the system. “There is no evidence at this time to suggest that criminal actions are involved in this incident,” the Lincoln County Sheriff stated.
Sadly, after several days of searching, Paulson’s body was discovered by Juan Heredia of the Angels Recovery Dive Team. “Our thoughts are with the family, who are facing an unbearable sorrow,” Sheriff Adam Shanks said. “We are deeply grateful for the support and dedication shown by the search teams and our communities throughout this difficult time, though we wish it was under different circumstances.”
A Tragedy
Those who heard about the tragedy in Oregon shared their sympathies. Nobody wanted to see a child go missing, let alone lose their life. “Dammit, I hate that outcome. Thank you to all the good people who were out looking for Dane, though,” one Redditor commented.
However, some people criticized the parents for failing to keep an eye on their toddler and allowing this incident to happen. “I want to know why the parents have a 2-year-old playing alone outside and can’t even provide a clear picture of their child,” a Facebook user replied to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s post
Others quickly defended the parents, saying that accidents could still happen. “It’s easy to say what you as a parent would have done in this context to prevent it. The truth is that mistakes do happen and that this one just proved to be fatal. The parent guilt must be unbearable after this tragedy.
