Florida Man Steals $1700 Worth of Shopping Carts During Early Morning Heist: ‘I’m Kind of Impressed’

A Florida man was caught on surveillance cameras stealing nearly $2,000 worth of shopping carts. However, they weren’t just any old carts. He went after the expensive ones. The unidentified man reportedly took six different utility carts from a Winn Dixie store in Southwest Florida in the early hours of the morning on March 26. The footage shows the man pulling up in a white pickup truck and loading the carts into the back of the vehicle.

According to Gulf Coast News Now, the Florida Crime Stoppers are now looking for the man who took five gray U-boat utility carts and one green double-decker cart. The U-boat carts are each worth $300 a piece. Meanwhile, the double-decker cart is valued at $200.

The carts were taken without permission from behind the store, which sells liquor. Police are now looking for information about the man, and there is even a cash reward of up to $3,000 for tips leading to the arrest of the thief. Of course, people over on Reddit had some interesting thoughts on the news story, especially since the reward proved to be higher than the value of the stolen items.

“So, they’re offering a $3,000 reward to get back $1700 worth of carts? Make that make sense,” one person commented.

“I’m kind of impressed, actually,” another person confessed.

“They weren’t shopping carts, they were the big ‘u-boats’ that are used to put groceries out on the floor. They are similar to the luggage cart at a hotel, just a low platform a few inches off the ground with metal rails on either end. Anyway much easier to transport than 15 or 20 actual shopping carts,” a third person explained.

“It’s a little crazy that people who would never steal so much as a candy bar will happily wander off with a cart that costs several times as much as the groceries in it that they actually paid for,” a fourth comment read.

Unfortunately, this isn’t a new crime in Florida. WJLA recently reported that another man was arrested for a similar crime back in February. He was charged with possession of a stolen shopping cart after he left a Publix with a cart valued at $150.

It seems that shopping carts are a hot item in Florida. While the man who stole nearly $2,000 of utility carts has yet to be found, when and if he is picked up, he’s likely looking at some serious legal trouble.
