Florida Teacher Fired for Using Student’s Preferred Name: ‘Nazi Bulls—’

One would expect that firing someone requires a valid reason. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case for this Florida teacher. Melissa Calhoun, who taught at Satellite High School, was known for caring deeply about her students and respecting their preferred names. However, not everyone shared that view. One student’s parent took offense when Calhoun used the student’s chosen name instead of the legal one, and she did so without parental consent.

As a result, Calhoun lost her teaching position in Brevard County. It may sound absurd, but Florida has a policy stating that teachers can only use a student’s preferred name with parental approval. Chief Strategic Communications Officer Janet Murnaghan stated that Calhoun had violated this law and that the district chose not to renew her ten-month contract, which is set to expire in May 2025, until the issue is resolved.

Not everyone is against Melissa Calhoun, however. A fellow teacher named Kristine Staniec has stepped up to defend her colleague. She even launched a petition on Change.org in an effort to stop Calhoun from being removed from her position. “Ms. Calhoun is being punished merely for showing respect to a student’s choices. She was reprimanded for referring to a student by the name they prefer rather than their official name — a direct blow to personal rights and respect,” Staniec wrote.

Staniec stated that what happened to the Florida teacher highlights a deeper issue within the U.S. education system, where empathy and understanding are often overshadowed by rigid bureaucracy. Calhoun’s choice to use the student’s preferred name, she explained, was simply an effort to make the student feel respected and valued.

The teacher wasn’t the only one standing behind Calhoun. Many Reddit users also found the reason for her dismissal absurd. One commenter bluntly called it “Nazi bulls—,” while others questioned the mindset of the parents who took offense to a teacher simply using their child’s preferred name. “What’s the kid’s home life like if they’re willing to destroy a teacher’s career over a preferred name? That’s what the state should be investigating,” another Redditor wrote.

One user even shared their own experience after hearing about what happened to Calhoun. “My only question now is how much that student is punished at home for not obeying their conservative parents. I imagine it’s similar to what I went through,” the user wrote. “Parents who only echo conservative hate, screaming at their kid for having different views. If the kid talks back, they get hit and grounded. Every conversation becomes about pushing the hate-filled agenda, and if you don’t comply, you’re treated like a traitor to both your family and your country.”
