With Star Wars Celebration currently in full swing in Japan, fans will be getting plenty of announcements regarding a galaxy far, far away. However, one of the most surprising announcements from the event was the news that a Darth Maul series is in development at Lucasfilm. Although many are probably extremely excited about this, some fans have their doubts regarding Disney’s ability to pull this off. Maul is a beloved villain who was brought back in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Since his return, the former Sith Lord has become a fan favorite.

Reports from the Hollywood Reporter state that during the final moments of a panel meant to celebrate 20 years of Star Wars animation, the voice of Darth Maul, Sam Witwer, confirmed the show’s existence. The fans attending Star Wars Celebration even got to see a little sneak peek of the coming animated series, Maul: Shadow Lord. Maul has won over the love of the fans through the character’s unexpected return from what many believed was death. This has led the dark side force user to grow in popularity incredibly fast. Darth Maul went from being a one-off villain from The Phantom Menace to one of the most beloved villains in the entire franchise. However, some fans online seem to think the show will flop due to the franchise being “Ruined by Disney.”

Star Wars Fans React to the Darth Maul Series Being Announced

It seems these fans are not alone either. More and more are flooding to X to share their thoughts about the upcoming animated project.

“They will find a way to make this trash, too,” said one.

“Maul will be the next character ruined by Disney,” wrote another.

Finally, another said, “They are finding ways to do George’s sequels within the established canon, and I’m here for it.”

It seems that while many are on the fence about this upcoming Maul show, some are welcoming it with open arms.

Darth Maul was once an apprentice to the strongest force user in the galaxy (Darth Sidious). However, after his tragic miscalculation on the planet Naboo, he was left for dead by his master. Known only as “The Shadow” in the Imperial era. Maul would rise from the ashes to create a massive criminal collective. While it is still unconfirmed what the plot of Maul: Shadow Lord will be, it will most likely follow Maul as he rules his evil organization.

Star Wars has seen its ups and downs in recent years. The sequel trilogy effectively split the fanbase in half. It can be extremely hard to bounce back from that. However, Disney has a chance to right some wrongs with Maul: Shadow Lord. As for now, there is not a lot of information regarding characters or storytelling. Although it will be very interesting to learn more about his upcoming animated project as it continues to be developed.
