Not that there was much doubt, but it is now official: Netflix’s sci-fi homage to all things 80s is returning with a third season. The Emmy Award winning Stranger Things will be back in the future to continue the story of Eleven, the town of Hawkins, and the Upside Down.
Netflix ran a Twitter poll, asking followers if they should bring back Stranger Things for a third season. The response from fans was quick, and Netflix responded with another tweet: “FOR THE LOVE OF STEVE, DUH! So hold tight baby darts – season 3 is officially happening.”

The first season of Stranger Things was a surprise hit, combining a loving tribute to the kid-focused adventure films of the 1980s with a heartfelt and well-acted ensemble cast. We were equally enamored with season 2, which continued the adventure, only to increase the stakes and danger many times over.
Spoilers for season 2 of Stranger Things for this paragraph only: it seemed doubtful at the end of this most recent season that the show would not returning. Even though Eleven was able to seal off the gateway into the Upside Down and stop the Mind Flayer, the final shot of the season teased that the beast was still out there, and the Upside Down was definitely not destroyed. It seems likely that the Mind Flayer will play a role in the third season as well.
End spoilers.
Netflix has not given a date for the third season of Stranger Things, but it seems likely it will be expedited. They hurried the second season so that the child actors would not grow up too much from one to the next. The creators and show runners, including the Duffer brothers, Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, and Iain Patterson are all returning for season three. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
