Mark Carney, Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister, becomes more politically vocal as he takes a shot at King Charles over Donald Trump’s royal invite on a second state visit. Weeks back, the British monarch shocked the world with a special invitation for Trump to grace the UK on a second state visit, which would make him the first-ever POTUS to snag the honors. His diplomatic letter to Trump had its desired effect, as the 78-year-old graciously accepted the invitation, on behalf of himself and his wife, Melania. However, this invitation has stirred divided opinions globally, making the monarch and the UK government subject to criticism.

Speaking to Sky News, Mark Carney, the Prime Minister of Canada, discussed a handful of political topics, including King Charles’ affiliation with Donald Trump despite his threats to the country’s sovereignty. Carney established how the monarch’s gesture held too much weight and “cut across clear messages” he hoped to send to the United States amid Trump’s threats. He divulged,

“I think to be frank, they [Canadians] wen’t impressed by that gesture… given the circumstance. It was at a time when we were being quite clear about the issues around sovereignty.”

Going further, Mark Carney discussed King Charles’ upcoming trip to Canada to open its Parliament as the country’s Head of State. The occasion would make the reigning British monarch the first sovereign to undertake this function in almost half a century. The last sovereign to open Parliament was the late Queen Elizabeth II, in 1977. Prior to that, she did the honors in 1957 during her first-ever visit to Canada as the reigning monarch.

King Charles’ visit to Canada would see him deliver the legendary throne speech on May 27, accompanied by his wife, Queen Camilla. Mark Carney, who has described the upcoming two-day royal visit from the titled “King of Canada” and the symbolic throne speech as a “historic honor that matches the weight of our times,” admitted the timing of this historic moment was no coincidence. He told the publication,

“All issues around Canada’s sovereignty have been accentuated by the president. So no, it’s not coincidental, but it is also a reaffirming moment for Canadians.”

Notably, the opening of Parliament is a ceremonial event that marks the formal commencement of a new Parliament following a general election in Canada. While the Governor General presided over this ceremonial event in years past, reading the throne speech on behalf of the monarch, King Charles is expected to do the honors at the commencement of this tenure, having accepted the invitation, following the footsteps of his late mother.

Carney Reaffirmed Canada’s Sovereignty During Trump Meeting

Ahead of hosting King Charles in Canada later this month, Mark Carney has taken the initiative to have a one-on-one with Donald Trump to discuss the brewing trade war amid tariff plans. During the meeting earlier this month in the White House’s Oval Office, the two leaders also touched on Trump’s plans to annex Canada, with Carney firmly declaring that “Canada isn’t for sale.”

While the meeting seemed somewhat tense from the viewer’s perspective, the duo has rehashed the encounter in a positive light, despite barely agreeing on various issues brought forward. Regardless, Carney remains positive that his meeting with Trump managed to sway the POTUS’ opinions on annexing Canada, albeit from a fully conceived “expectation” to a mere “desire,” which is a significant step towards reaffirming the State’s sovereignty and ensuring it is duly respected.
