Juneteenth, or June 19, is a rather important moment in US history as it’s the day when enslaved African Americans were emancipated and also marks the end of the Civil War. It seems for some people in Washington DC, however, Juneteenth is unnecessary and is full of nonsense, with them further questioning what’s happening to the country.
This particular unnamed person is an old woman visiting the Washington Monument in Washington DC. TikTok user @kdubyanolongerflirtin posted a clip of the woman during an interview where she stated the following:
“Juneteenth is– excuse me, bullsh*t. What’s happening to the white people? They have a Black Ms. America, they have a Black college, they have a Black month. What do we have? Now they have Juneteenth.
Yes, I understand there was slavery, don’t get me wrong. But there was also a Holocaust, and that was more recent than slavery, but you don’t hear the Jews saying ‘gimme gimme gimme gimme.’ What’s the point of Juneteenth? What is it? I don’t know,” according to the old woman in the video.
The old lady was likely referring to the eight Black women who won Miss America when she mentioned a Black Miss America. So far, most of the 97 Miss America winners have been of Caucasian descent. It’s also not clear what she was complaining about when she suggested that White people should have something similar to Juneteenth, as Juneteenth is a holiday dedicated to emancipation from slavery.
The old lady’s remarks have since sparked outrage and disgusted reactions online, with many claiming that her generation (likely the Baby Boomers or a Silent Generation member) is the most hateful one. For the record, the old lady is not the only individual who had negative opinions about Juneteenth. There have been many allegations on social media about people who encountered senior citizens who publicly denounced the holiday.
Meanwhile, another Baby Boomer, namely President Donald Trump, has also voiced his somewhat negative impression of Juneteenth, stating that the US has too many non-working holidays, implying that the country could earn more without it.
The Irony of the Boomers’ Remarks
The funny thing is, the old lady in the video was likely on a holiday trip, seeing as she’s in the Washington Monument grounds. That could very well mean she benefited from the Juneteenth non-working holiday, which, whether she liked it or not, gave her (or the people who funded it) the freedom from work to go on a vacation.
People online have since pointed out the hypocrisy of the old lady. After all, Juneteenth is only a holiday and one day out of 365 years celebrating something significant in US history. Many have since criticized the old lady’s tirade about Juneteenth as they felt it echoed what most racists or even closet racists had to say about the American holiday.
“she’s probably touring the monuments bc her office gave her the day off for juneteenth. Ungrateful!!!,” points out Emergency-Bottle-432
“Imagine being this upset at a f***ing holiday lmao,” says AnotherSh*ttyComment
“‘What do we have?’ Every f***ing thing else,” answers Baby gravy
