Nearly two years after stepping away from the spotlight, Amber Heard is making a surprising return to acting, and this time, she’s trading the big screen for the stage. The 39-year-old actress, originally from Austin, Texas, is best known for her breakout role in Friday Night Lights (2004) and more recently for her appearances in In the Fire and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023. However, her career momentum stalled following her highly publicized and contentious legal battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp.
After relocating to Madrid, Spain, Heard shocked fans this past Mother’s Day by revealing she had quietly welcomed fraternal twins, daughter Agnes and son Ocean. Now, it seems she’s ready to ease back into the public eye, but not in the way many expected.
According to Variety, Heard will be making her stage debut in the world premiere of Spirit of the People, a new play by Slave Play creator Jeremy O. Harris. The production is set to run during the 2025 Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts, which takes place from July 17 to August 3. While the official debut date for the play remains under wraps, the announcement has already stirred buzz and backlash.
Details about Heardโs character have not been disclosed, but she joins a diverse ensemble cast including 13 Reasons Why alum Brandon Flynn and The Craft: Legacy star Lรญo Mehiel. Additional cast members include Tony-nominated actors Ato Blankson-Wood and James Cusati-Moyer, as well as Amandla Jahava, Emma Ramos, Julian Sanchez, Zachary Booth, and Tonatiuh. The production will be helmed by director Katina Medina Mora and promises to “confront uncomfortable truths about land and what it means to destroy it.”

While some may view the move as a bold reinvention, the online reaction has been anything but welcoming. People lit up Daily Mail‘s comments section with harsh criticism from users who remain unimpressed with Heardโs acting chops and still bitter over the courtroom drama with Depp.
Many commenters slammed her return to the spotlight, with one writing that Heardโs โworst acting was her trial and the ridiculous videos she played of Depp and her at home.โ Another added, โShe is such a bad actress. Please give it up. They should have just written her out of ‘Aquaman.’ There was no need for them to have a kid, and she was not really in it. So not much of a love story. Itโs embarrassing.โ
Some critiques cut even deeper. โPersonality and ethics aside, sheโs a terrible actress,โ one user posted, while another simply labeled her โtoxic.โ Referencing a widely mocked detail from the Depp trial, someone sarcastically asked, โIs there a scene in this play where a narcissistic female poops in her ex-husbandโs bed?
