US Gamers Angry as Trump Tariff Makes Nintendo Prices Cheaper in Other Developed Countries, ‘What a Stupid Idea’

Wait it out? What if it stays?

A few months ago, one of the biggest worries, not just for gamers but also nationwide in the US, was President Trump’s tariffs, which could ultimately make foreign-made products more expensive. Now, an actual price comparison from a Nintendo fan in Europe has sparked outrage among Nintendo fans in the US after they realized just how much more expensive Nintendo’s physical products have become thanks to Trump’s tariffs.

The effect of USA tariffs revealed as the European prices of the new Amiibo are €10 cheaper across the board

My Nintendo Store has recently unveiled its pricing for the first batch of Amiibo figure accessories after the Trump tariffs took effect, and a Reddit user posted the comparison to the Nintendo Switch subreddit. In total, Amiibo products are around $10/€10 more expensive than their European counterparts, using Metroid Prime 4 Beyond and Super Mario Galaxy Amiibos as points of comparison.

It’s also worth noting that the European prices in the post have taxes included, and the US prices don’t, which means they could be more expensive in retail stores. This cheaper cost for Amiibo products outside of the US is also present in other developed countries, such as Canada, not just Europe.

One of the top comments, for example, alleged that the prices for the Amiibo accessories are 33 percent cheaper compared to their US pricing. So it’s not like you can chalk up the increased costs to longer shipping distance. “You can also see this in Canada. Our dollar is much weaker than the USD but the amiibo are the same prices here: $30, $40, and $50. Effectively making them 33% cheaper here,” according to the Canadian Nintendo fan.

People online have expressed anger at the tariffs

While it was somewhat expected already a few months ago, the effects of Trump’s tariffs on the gaming industry have been further magnified thanks to the actual price comparison from My Nintendo Store in Europe. Ironically, Nintendo Switch 2 prices are actually higher in Europe (and likely even the highest in the world). This time, however, the tables could be slowly turning, starting with Amiibo figures, which are manufactured in China. Trump notably imposed a 125 percent tariff on China.

“Worth noting that the prices in euros include sales tax. The prices in USD do not include tax. So in most states you are adding ~7% to the cost.”

“What a stupid idea, I’m sure we wouldn’t elect a president with it…”

“Thanks, Trump…”

Hence, gamers and Nintendo fans in the US have since become cautious with their expense plans, with some even stating that they’ll be holding off on purchases, at least until the tariffs end. Of course, some — regardless of the tariffs or not — think Nintendo’s price tag for those small Amiibo figures is still too high.
